Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news event on 21st of March, 2012, that Coleman was to be replacing Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat chose to cast her in the role since she seemed to have the best chemistry with Smith. Also, she spoke quicker than him.
